Jörg M. Colberg has quietly updated his online portfolio of photographic projects. No Place Like The Cape combines straight photographic records of Cape Cod together with old (and blurred) family photos.

Even though the above photograph reminds me of another German photographer’s blurry work, I think it’s quite a haunting and powerful picture. I’m curious to see where this new direction of work might take him.

I finally got caught up with some outdated New Yorker reading earlier today. In the January 21, 2008 issue was an informative article about the fascinating life of Lee Miller. Now I would like to head over to Philadelphia and see the exhibition on display.

The article isn’t available online but you can see a short slideshow of her work here.

On a completely different note, read this article about a MySpace girl’s unfortunate suicide. I’m surprised that I hadn’t heard about this before but it’s certainly a scary reminder of the strange world we live in.

Oliver Stone On George Bush

Inspired by the smart and playful work of Jason Polan and his wonderful Drawing Project I have decided to follow his lead.

Twice a month for the next 12 months a photograph will be randomly posted here. Each photograph will be available to one person who requests it. A common theme will (hopefully) develop between the photographs chosen for the project.

All the photographs will be archival inkjet prints on 8.5 x 11 inch paper and signed by me.

Kings Of Convenience

I’ve been obsessively listening to a Kings of Convenience album from 2004 called Riot on an Empty Street.

Kings of Convenience are a pop folk duo from Norway which consists of two guys, Øye and Bøe. They both sing and compose the music which is incredibly beautiful and soulful. I’m sometimes reminded of early Simon and Garfunkel or even (in some strange way) of Brazilian Bossa Nova like Baden Powell.

Listen to Know How (featuring Feist), a great song off the album but the whole thing is pretty damn solid.

Taco Bell Drawing Club Membership Card

“Taco Bell Drawing Club is a club that takes place at Taco Bells all over the country. All you need to do to join is go to Taco Bell and draw!”

I attended the weekly meeting of the Taco Bell Drawing Club this evening and had a great time. I made two drawings, one of a New York cityscape that included the twin towers (copied from the wall at Taco Bell) and then since I couldn’t think of what else to draw, Jason Polan suggested I draw Batman.

Like it says on the site, all you need to do is go to Taco Bell and draw to become a member. Then you’ll get yourself one of those great membership cards….

Roy Arden, a Canadian photographer and contemporary of Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Stan Douglas and Rodney Graham has an exhibition up at the Vancouver Art Gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia.

One of the pieces in the show, The World as Will and Representation (1991-2007), is displayed on a computer screen and consists of a rapid-fire collection of 28,000 plus images found on the internet and combined with other sources.

You can watch this piece on your own computer by clicking here. The World as Will and Representation is accompanied by a kind of annoying and insistent soundtrack (yet somehow I like it) but is certainly worth a look. The running time is an hour and half so make sure you have some free time on hand.

It’s like watching a mesmerizing alternative history of the world taking place.

I didn’t know much about Martin Puryear’s sculptural work before I saw the current retrospective at MoMa. The exhibition is a must see and in my opinion it completely surpasses the Richard Serra exhibition installed just before in the same space. Although there is no denying the innovative (as well as hubristic) power of Serra’s art, I’m pretty sure I would prefer Puryear’s delicate hand-crafted works any day.

There is something very meditative and transformative about his sculptures and the way in which they subtly play off recognizable forms. Puryear handles and controls his material in the most impressive and surprising ways. His sculptural abilities transform wood (as well as wire and tar) into unique forms that resonate in visceral and psychological ways.

The exhibition closes on January 14th, hurry up and see it.
