The picture itself is powerless

September 28, 2011

“How will your pictures show that what is being produced at SolarWorld is good for mankind?”

“Just by the title.”

“So photographs don’t speak.”

“The picture itself is powerless to show.”

From an article by Janet Malcolm about Thomas Struth in last week’s New Yorker.

Unfortunately you have to be a subscriber to read the full story.

Gerhard Richter Painting

September 16, 2011

Corinna Belz filmed Gerhard Richter in his studio over a period of several months in 2009 while he worked on a series of large abstract paintings.

That’s quite a psychological and surprisingly dramatic trailer.

Read more about the film here and on the film’s website.

Christian Patterson – This & That

September 14, 2011

I Pledge Allegation, 2011

Christian Patterson re-launched his website several weeks ago and finally posted a robust selection of images from his recently completed long term project, Redheaded Peckerwood.

The book of the project, published by Mack, is slated for release later this fall. In the meantime, Patterson has set up two new sections on his site, one called This and the other called That.

Christian Patterson, Helluva Mess, 2011

This features special items for sale such as the above limited edition, old-fashioned and hand-painted show card made for the Peckerwood project.

That features images and text related to the project and is building momentum as the book gets ready for release. For those who can recall the defunct Speak, See, Remember, one can almost say that Patterson is back to blogging albeit in a very different form.

C/O Berlin – Talents 2012

September 13, 2011

C/O Berlin is once again searching for photographers (younger than 35) for their annual Talents exhibition series.

The four selected artists will be featured in solo exhibitions at C/O Berlin and also have their work published in individually crafted catalogues.

I was a Talent in 2009 and I can attest that this is one hell of an opportunity.

This year’s theme is Cinematic Thinking and the deadline for submissions is December 16, 2011.

Go to the website for further information.
